Hegumen Arseny (Sokolov)

Former representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' to the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East

Church biblical scholar, former representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' to the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and former professor and chief researcher at the Saints Cyril and Methodius Institute for Post-Graduate Studies (General Church Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies).

He signed the open appeal of the ROC priests against the war; his signature was the first on the document. On March 28, he started his own Telegram channel, where he wrote: “‘Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!’ (Book of the Prophet Isaiah 5:20). Woe to those who call a fratricidal war a peacekeeping operation!” On May 27, 2022, he was dismissed from his post as the representative of the Moscow Patriarch to the Patriarch of Antioch. Subsequently, he was expelled from the Institute for Post-Graduate Studies and denied admission to the clergy of the city of Moscow. His petition to transfer to the Archdiocese of Western European Parishes of Russian Tradition was left unconsidered.
